WPC-300 Group Project on Gender Wage Gap Among Professions

WPC-300 Group Project on Gender Wage Gap Among Professions

Overview
To gain real world experience in data analytics, teams of students will work on a Team Project. The project starts with the ideation and framing of an interesting real world problem and progresses through the data collection, data analysis and reporting and communication of the results. The project has 4 staged deliverables’ and lasts throughout the semester.

Scope of the Project

The instructor will suggest a few topics during the first few weeks of the class. The student teams may come up with additional topics and problems, which need to be approved by the instructor before proceeding.

Teams
Teams are typically made up of 5 students (max of 6) from your section of WPC300. Larger teams are not permitted unless approved by the instructor. Also, you have a great opportunity to work in functionally diverse teams within the classroom environment. Remember that this is how teams are structured in the corporate environment. Each team member brings varied skillsets to the team environment, and you should use this opportunity to not only showcase individual team members’ skills but also to increase your individual skillsets by learning from each other.

Team Contract (due 1/23): Team members will complete and sign the ‘membership agreement’ document available separately. Note** To gauge member participation, as part of the Final Deliverable, I will ask everyone to name and rate their team members using the peer evaluation forms. These forms should be completed separately by each group member, and they have a cover sheet and are turned in online so as to maintain confidentiality.

Milestone 1 – Proposal (due 2/15): (2 pages) Give a short description of the project. List the problem you want to research. Give a short description of the key elements pertinent to the problem and how you plan to solve it.

Milestone 2 – First report (due 3/13) : (Approximately 4 pages) Project summary a textual summary of project progress. A detailed plan for data collection and analysis method.

Milestone 3 – Second report (due 4/12): (Approximately 6 pages) This time the team should have gathered data for analysis, the team should have a substantial progress on the data collection, cleansing and analysis.-300 Group Project on Gender Wage Gap Among Professions

Purpose of Project

  • Our team will analyze the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine if there is an existing wage gap between male and female across different occupations.

Description of Project

  • The gender gap has always been an issue for decades. While the country as a whole has made some progress in employment equality from the increase in female work force to encouraging equal wage in occupations, the wage gap between male and female workers still exist. However, this project does not look at the data as a whole and draw generalization, nor pick a particular occupation and conclude if there exists a wage gap. Instead, this project will selectively pick several industries and analyze the occupations within the industry to have a closer look at the wage gap, which professionals is greatly affected, and if, by any chance, the gap has been narrowed over the years. The following are the attributes that we will consider in our project:

  • Professionals: Management, Finance, Computer science, engineering, physical and social science, etc.
  • Occupations: CEO, Purchasing manager, logistics manager, financial analyst, insurance underwriter, credit analyst, economist, actuaries, chemical engineer, teacher, registered nurse etc.
  • Number of workers in a profession (male, female, total)
  • Weekly earnings
  • Annual income

These attributes will be separated by gender and examined over a time period (2014 v 2017 data) to determine where the problem of gender wage gap is most serious and which professions have made progress in closing the wage gap.

Problems to solve:

  • Is there a gender wage gap?
  • Is there a significant difference in annual income between male and female workers on a broad level? On a more specific level?
  • Do male workers always receive higher wages or does the gap vary across different professions?
  • Which professions are male-dominated and which are female-dominated?
  • Is there a progress in closing the wage gap?
  • Can we predict a person’s annual income based on gender, profession, and occupation?

Key elements and solution

  • These are the key elements we think are crucial to answer our questions: median weekly earnings, annual income, professions, and occupations.
  • We will utilize t-test to determine if there is a significant difference between male and female annual income in general and within profession.
  • We will also use t-test to determine if there is a significant difference between the number of workers by gender in each profession.
  • We will apply regression analysis to predict annual income of a person based on gender, profession, and occupation.
  • Other consideration includes if the gender wage gap has been narrowed or widened over the years.

Description of Data Source

  • The data set are pulled from Bureau of Labor Statistics by occupation and gender in January 2015 and December 2017. The datasets are then extracted and loaded into a single spreadsheet by our team to facilitate the analysis process.
