Should a woman’s legal right to an abortion depend on whether she is morally responsible for becoming pregnant?Phil 120, Spring 2018 Paper Topics

  1. Do you agree with Peter de Marneffe’s claim that, (a) people have a moral right of “self-sovereignty” and (b) criminalizing the production and sale of drugs does not violate that right?

(You can approach this question in different ways depending on your evaluation of (a) or (b).)

  1. Should a woman’s legal right to an abortion depend on whether she is morally responsible for becoming pregnant?

(There are many ways of tackling this question, but please refer to at least one of the papers by Lee and George, or Margaret Little and be sure to give an exposition of the relevant parts of their respective arguments. For your argument, please assume that individuals lacking legal competence (e.g. minors, mentally-impaired people), and people who are coerced into sex are not morally responsible for conception.)

  1. Do you agree with Gillian Brock’s thesis that members of indigenous peoples’ have a moral right to their historical lands because land may be a way for individuals to obtain the means of subsistence?
