Video Assignment Essay Help-ESSAY 2 VISUAL COMMUNICATION
ESSAY 2 VISUAL COMMUNICATION PAGE 1
The message
What do you believe
is the purpose of this
video? What is its
audience? What is
the main point of this
story? From what
point of view does the
videographer tell it?
Does he engage you
emotionally in the
story? If so, how? This
part of the assignment
corresponds to your
interpretation for the
photo essay.
Content
What subjects or
objects does the
camera focus on?
What background
settings are significant in telling the story? What
close-up/detail shots? What B-roll do you see?
Discuss the sound: What do natural sound,
interviews and music contribute?
Form
Although there is overlap between photography
and video composition—visual elements and
principles of design, etc.—we want you to analyze
a different set of formal elements for this essay.
They are:
1) Techniques used to compress time and/or
action (sequences);
2) Types of shots (LS, MS, CU, XCU, tilts, pans,
in-frame/out-of-frame, etc.);
3) Variety of shots;
4) Angle of shots;
5) Balance, framing, rule of thirds, head room and
lead room, etc;
6) Directional forces, rules of screen direction;
7) Sequences used to tell the story;
8) Cuts and pacing;
9) Lighting that is particularly effective;
10) Detail shots that are effective;
11) Are the camera-motion shots (pans, tilts,
tracking, dolly) motivated? If so, what are those
motivations?
12) Analyze one sequence, explaining what kind
of sequence it is and how its shots work together.
Criticism. In any of these categories, if there are
aspects of the video you think don’t work or could
be better, we encourage you to critique them.

NOTE > Even a short video is made up of
numerous shots and sequences. You do not
have to analyze every aspect of every shot or
sequence, but write enough to persuade us that
you understand and can identify the concepts we
have taught in class as they apply to this video.
A minimum of 750 words is required, but we
encourage you to write more.
We suggest you start with a general description,
then give particular examples. We strongly
suggest you re-read and follow the feedback your
AI gave you on your earlier essays.
Criteria
Essays may not be right or wrong, but they can
be better or worse. The criteria by which we will
evaluate your essay are:
1. Correspondence. Are you seeing, hearing
and discussing what is actually in the video? Are
you avoiding inaccurate statements?
2. Coherence. Is your argument coherent and
logically consistent?
3. Completeness. Have you said everything
necessary? Have you covered message, content
and form thoroughly?
4. Clarity. Have you expressed your observations
and ideas so clearly that there is no possibility of
our misunderstanding them?
5. Language mechanics. Correct spelling,
grammar, punctuation and usage are expected.
Expressive, graceful writing is welcomed.
