Final Paper Prompt
Spring 2018
In the format of a typed, double-spaced, 5-7 page essay, please address the following:
“Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that
affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally – either directly or through
elected representatives – in the proposal, development, and creation of laws.”
The United States prides itself on being the first nation in modern history to adopt a democratic
constitution. Our government even tries to spread democracy to other countries. But, is the Unites States
really a democracy in the full sense of the word?
Write an essay that argues that the United States is not really a democracy. In doing so, emphasize nondemocratic
practices, outcomes, and the inconsistencies of American politics.
Suggestions:
I encourage you to do some outside research. You are required to have at least one source which you find
through Jstor.org. However, it is entirely possible (though, much more difficult) to write an excellent
paper based primarily (not solely) on the readings you have already done for this class and on the lectures
(no need to cite lecture). The best papers would probably include sources/articles that provide evidence
for the counterargument (i.e. the US is a democracy).
A good starting point would be for you to look more closely at:
– Gerrymandering
– The Electoral College
– The Senate
– The intentions of the Founding Fathers
– Etc.
* Please note that you are not allowed to turn in work that you have already turn in to another class, doing so will
get you a zero on the assignment.
