Response #2: Moving Beyond Treeline; 3-5 Pages;
Refer to the book, Moving Beyond Treeline, in formulating your responses. Choose four of the five categories to respond to, in which “Summary of the Book” must be one of them. In other words, you choose the four categories you want to respond to, but must include the last one, which is “Summary of the Book.” Some of your responses can be shorter or longer than others, just so the total is in the range of length indicated above. In other words, this entire section will be 3-5 pages in length.
Chapters 1-2: Adventure in Our Lives
1. Provide your personal reaction to some aspect of the author’s journey so far and any similarities or differences to your experiences in nature. (Refer to the reading.)
Chapters 3-4: Challenge, Risk, and Adversity
2. Describe the challenges and rewards of Olesen’s lifestyle. What are your thoughts about how Olesen has chosen to live in the wilderness? Summarize the difficulties of the expedition. (Refer to the reading.)
Chapters 5-7: Life and Death (And What It Means To Live)
3. Given the hardships involved, identify what attracts Aki to the wilderness. A wilderness experience can be dangerous. Discuss the pros and cons of establishing a rescue free wilderness area. (Refer to the reading.)
Chapters 8-10: The Meaning of a Wilderness Experience
4. Describe when a moment has “turned to magic” from your own experiences (it doesn’t have to be in wilderness). Are there similarities to what the author describes (“the country, the space, the sky”) in these chapters to your experiences? Have you ever been “overwhelmed” by such experiences? (Refer to the reading.)

5. Discuss your overall response to the book. What did it make you think about in your own life? What are three major “lessons” offered in this book? These “lessons” do not necessarily have to do with wilderness. What does the title of the book mean to you now that you have finished the book?
