Search online for a sample cover letter, connected to your future career field. Compare the letter against the advice for a cover letter that Markelprovides in Ch.10. Evaluate how the applicant makes his/her argument for hire. First, you will need to identify the purpose and audience of the cover letter. What expectations might employers in this field hold? Then explore how the writer uses Aristotle’s ethos, logos and pathos to persuade his/her prospective employer. Point to specific moments that employ these methods of appeal. Consider the following: Is the letter persuasive? Does it use specific evidence to illustrate his/her educational and employment experience? How does the writer use certain appeals to connect with the employer? Quote directly from the cover letter to show us how the writer uses rhetorical strategies. If some strategies seem unsuccessful to you, then explain why. Which strategies of Markel does the applicant utilize? How might the applicant improve his/her cover letter?
