SPSS 5 Instructions: Correlation (40 points)

Part One:

1. Problem Set 1: The Pea rson correlation coefficient File: Open “Module 5 Exercise File 1 ” found in Blackboard Course C ontent (Course Guides and Assignment Instructions—Assignment Instructions—SPSS Homework—SPSS Homework 5 Files). Research Scenario: A sports psychologist wants to examine the relationship between hours spen t sleeping and hours spent training per week for long-distance cyclists. He collects data from 23 different athletes , including the average amount of sleep per night for each cyclist and the average number of hours per week spent training . Conduct a Pearson correlation coefficient analysis to determine whether there is a relationship between these two variables. Paste SPSS output (3 pts). Beneath the output, type the answers to the following questions:

a. Is the correlation between average daily sleep and average time spent training positive or negative? How do you know this? (3 pts)

b. Is the correlation between hours of sleep and hours of training significant or not? How do you know this? (3 pts)

2. Create a scatterplot that demonstrates the relationship between amount of sleep and hours of training. (4 pts)

3. Write an APA-style Results section based on your analysis. Use the answers to the above questions to help you. All homework Results sections should follow the example given in the SPSS tutorials. Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis. (4 pts)

Part Two:

Problem Set 1 : The Pearson correlation coefficient Research Scenario: A researcher wants to study a current theory that those who are more susceptible to hyponosis are more prone to experience changes to their sense of agency (being in control of one’s actions and their outcomes). She recruits a sample of 15 participants and administers the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale:C (SHSS:C, Weitzenhoffer and Hilgard, 1962) and the Sense of Agency Rating Scale (SOARS, Polito et al., 2013). On the SHSS:C, higher scores indicate being more susceptible to hypnotism (a person is easier to hypnotize). On the SOARS measure, higher scores indicate changes to a person’s sense of agency, or control. Conduct a Pearson correlation coefficient analysis to determine whether there is a relationship between these two variables.

Part Three: Cumulative Homework

Problem Set 1: Choose the correct method from tests learned in previous modules. Research scenario: In response to recent Gallup and Pew Center polls of Americans’ trust in their political leaders ( http://www.gallup.com/poll/195716/americans-trust-political-leaders-public-new-lows.aspx ; http://www.people-press.org/2014/11/13/public-trust-in-government/ ), a political psychologist decides to study people’s trust in politicians among different political parties and regions in his state. The psychologist administers a questionnaire with possible scores ranging from 1-50, with higher scores indicating higher trust in politicians, and lower scores indicating lower trust. The data are shown in the table below (next page). Choose the correct test, then follow the directions after the table.
