ENGL 366 – Semester 382 – Assignment 1 – Lecturer: Filiz KALALI –

Deadline for Submission: Week 6 Thursday

OPTION 1
OBSERVING LANGUAGE PRODUCTION STAGES OF CHIDLREN – Chapter 1
Instructions:

1. Find 2 children of different ages (preferably between 1 and 5 years of age) whom you can observe.

2. Observe them for a duration of time which will be enough to capture videos of moments when children are speaking.

REMINDER: Try not to show the camera to the kids, as they might not prefer to speak.

(There is no MINIMUM duration to observe; the duration you need to observe them will change according to how long it will take you to collect satisfactory data from the child. Sometimes the child will not speak, so you will have to continue your observation.)

3. For each child, take note of as many utterances as possible, and what these utterances indicate regarding the child’s speech production stage.

Number of pages for your assignment is not a sign that the assignment will receive a good mark. Make sure you have adequate explanation with evidence regarding why the child is in a particular stage.

For the sections of your report and a sample format, see below. (If you need to insert additional sections to your report, you can do so)

It is not the number of pages which is important, but the way you have submitted evidence and explanation in you report.

4. Do not decorate your cover page. Make sure you write the necessary information.

“Report: Teaching Baby Sign Language to a Baby”

Student Name ……………………….

Student ID …………………………….

Course Section ……………………..

So, your cover page will look like this:

SAMPLE REPORT FOR OPTION 2:

Name of the child: Anwar

Who is the child? My sister’s daughter

The child’s age: 11 months old

Language Production Stage (estimate): Babbling and naming (she can name a few objects, but she mostly repeats syllables to exercise her articulators)

Teaching Process:

1. What sign language did you choose to teach? From which resource did you find it?

2. How did you decide on that particular sign language to teach? (What did you like about it? Or from what aspects did you find it useful?)

3. How did you teach the baby sign language? (Explain step-by-step):

e.g. I see the baby every day. Therefore, when I was talking to the baby in my usual way, I also started to repeat the signs that I learned from the book “………”, and after I used the signs repetitively, the baby started to imitate me. In 10 days, the baby started to use 7 words to communicate with us. These signs are the signs for the words “….”, “…..” etc.

4. How well does the baby now perform in baby sign language? Explain.

She can use the 7 signs consistently. It shows that she has learned these signs. The other signs I tried to teach her were not learned very well: she cannot use them when we need these words. etc.

5. Do you think what you taught the baby has helped her/him to express herself/himself? Explain.

6. Do you think s/he has learned it easily from you? Did s/he enjoy the learning process? Explain.

7. Do you think this sign language will cause any delay in her/his language production? Explain.

8. How did you find this experience? Explain.
