Your Assignment
Your company is beginning to explore exporting. Before starting any negotiations they need to get some basic export
policies formed. Your role as Director of Logistics is to ask questions and provide solutions. To date your company has
only shipped locally and are very efficient at it. Finance has stated that a Letter of Credit at sight is the preferred
payment. They have confirmed that insurance will be paid by your company but need to determine which Institute
clause to use and why. The premium will be .31% Sales wants to guarantee delivery within 30 days for “made to stock”
inventory, or expedited services of 2 days or less. They are expecting to have orders shipped out monthly for 2 years.
A Disruption
A shipment from Toronto is a 40ft container and is booked with an ocean carrier that has a rail interchange agreement
with CN rail. The planned routing is to rail the container to the Port of Montreal, then by Ocean to the destination port.
One day prior to your company loading the container, the workers at CN rail declare a strike and walked off the job. All
CN rail traffic, coast to coast is halted.
What alternative would you, as Director of Logistics, suggest and why?
As a group you must decide on:
1) A company name. This company is not to be an existing company. You will also have to create a letterhead.
2) Your company will select a product to export (see below)
3) You are to create a buyer’s company name and address
Your paper should include the following
1) A flow chart depicting movement from your warehouse to your clients door. The flow chart should include a name of
all the stops/services that are required to have the shipment arrive at destination. It should also include the point where
your responsibilities end based upon your incoterms.
2) A list of questions that you should ask, and your solutions, your team to ensure you can effectively and efficiently
move the cargo. Packaging, unitization and minimizing concerns must be included.
3) Indicate routing and lead times
3) You are to prepare the typical commercial and transportation documents, include your letterhead, required for a
shipment
4) Complete the transportation specific fields on a letter of Credit for a shipment

5) Email your Professor to obtain costs or any extra explanation, if required. You must type in the subject line the
following: INTL233-W18 and “the name of your company”
6) Choose your country (North America excluded), product and Incoterms (groups C or D). List it on the discussion
board. Use the subject line to indicate country, product and Incoterm. In the body indicate company name and
members. Please note you cannot choose a previously chosen country, product or Incoterm. You will receive a
confirmation that your choice is unique and that you may proceed your work.
