History Assignment Paper Help-How did Anglos or “American Society” view Mexican immigrants and Mexican ancestry citizens? | |
THE HISTORY OF CHICANX/MEXICAN AMERICA PART II, 1900-PRESENT
QUESTIONS (ANSWER ONLY ONE): 2. How did Anglos or “American Society” view Mexican immigrants and Mexican ancestry citizens? How did people describe them? How did social institutions like schools, etc., treat them? Were they seen as a “problem” as seemed the case in the article “What’s to be done with em?” and the film Zoot Suit Riots? Is it still the case that Mexicans are seen as a “problem” in the USA? 3. Imagine you are a Mexican immigrant to the USA who has settled in Chicago after the Revolution of 1910 and you are writing a letter home to your now elderly brothers and sisters back home in Coahuila, Mexico in 1950 to let them know what has been going on since you left Mexico in 1910. What sort of neighborhood do you live in? What sort of job do you have? How are you and your family treated and have you faced discrimination? What sorts of activities can you imagine happening? How did your kids respond to US culture? How did you respond? What impact has repatriation had on you or people you know in Chicago? You can borrow from readings based in Chicago, Gary and East Chicago, Indiana, Texas, California and other places for sources of information to paint your portrayal. 4. How did Mexican Americans/Chicanos/Chicanas like George Sanchez and others confront discrimination through legal action, protest, labor organizing, scholarly activism, and other ways? Be sure to discuss specific court cases from the readings, videos, and specific programs such as those that Sanchez participated in. What were the limits/weaknesses of their approach? What were some of the successes?
