PAPER PROMPT
Throughout the course of the semester, we have touched on a number of different religion and worldviews that emerged between 500 BCE and 622 CE. In an essay of at least 4 pages, please comparatively analyze two of the religions or worldviews found in the list below. In the paper, you should identify various similarities and differences that arise between these religions and analyze why these differences or similarities occur. You are required to use scholarly sources like journals and books (see requirements above) to supplement your textbook reading and lectures. In this essay you should examine particular aspects of each religion including, but not limited to, the religions’ founders, the guiding principles of each faith, and the historical context in which each religion emerged/spread. Of particular importance are the reasons these religions emerged, took their distinct shape, and why they spread.

Instructions:
Below I have provided your paper topic for this semester. Answer it with details and specific examples from class materials (textbook, lecture/discussion notes) and other relevant books and journal articles. Provide references for all materials used to write the paper. When quoting from books and journal articles provide the author and/or title and specific page number(s); when referring to class lectures/discussions provide the title and date from your notes. Instead of relying on Internet sources such as WIKIPEDIA and Encyclopedia Britannica (which earn you no credit), use books and journal articles written by specialists on the religions and worldviews you choose. So, do not use these or similar sources.
Formatting Checklist:
- One inch margins, double-spaced text, and 12-point Times New Roman font
- Essay of four complete pages in length (no more than 6 pages)
- Separate title page (vertically and horizontally centered) that includes (in this order): Your name, professor name, class #, date, and descriptive paper title (not counted in your total page count)
- Separate bibliographic page in Chicago-style formatting (not counted in your total page count)
- Must use at least one primary source, one scholarly book, and one scholarly journal article to supplement and improve your paper
- MUST USE FOOTNOTES IN CHICAGO STYLE FORMATTING
- Avoid Plagiarism!!! (Will be discussed in class)
- Proofread the essay thoroughly. Multiple spelling/grammar errors will impact your overall score.
Failure to comply with the above rubric will be penalized
Three main criteria considered in evaluating the papers are:
- Presentation of a clearly written thesis and an organized and well-argued answer to the question.
- Use of a significant range of SCHOLARLY sources, details, examples and appropriate quotes to support your answer.
- The quality of the sources consulted.

Due date: Friday, April 20th (in-class). Papers submitted via email will be rejected. They must be turned in as a hard-copy.
