CIS 300 – Final Research Project

Overview: For this research project assignment, you will investigate and report on an issue related to the course material that involves some controversy. The topic should relate to a social, legal, or ethical aspect of computers or computing technology. If your topic is covered in the textbook, do not use the textbook as a main source. Report in more depth and/or on newer or other aspects of the topic.

The research outcome must be reported using the University’s brand compliant PowerPoint Research Poster Template (http://www.southalabama.edu/departments/publicrelations/brand/templates.html).

You will begin working on this project from week 2. During the first ten weeks of the course, as you read the textbook and participate in the Discussions, you need to be looking for a topic to use in your Research Project.

By week 13, you will select your topic and submit a summary for instructor approval. The final version of your project will need to be completed during week 16.

Selecting a Topic : the Topic for this project is Google clips

Week 16 Research Assignment

The Final Research Project Poster must be created as a PowerPoint Poster. You will need to use the University brand compliant Research Poster Template as your starting point. This can be found at:

http://www.southalabama.edu/departments/publicrelations/brand/templates.html

Your poster must include the following panels:

  • Title o Project Title, Your Name, Course Information
  • Introduction (1 paragraph) o Explanation of the Topic o Why was Topic Selected? How does it relates to the course?
  • Background/History (2 to 4 paragraphs) o Information about Topic o Identify the Controversial Issue
  • Pros Supporting the Issue (Unbiased Facts) o This list should contain at least 4 supporting facts.
  • Cons Discrediting the Issue (Unbiased Facts) o This list should contain at least 4 negating facts.
  • Personal Analysis (2 to 4 paragraphs) o Indicate which side of the issue you fall on. Explain why.

o Include your thoughts on how the issue should be addressed/resolved.

  • Works Cited o Using standard MLA format.

Note: The final project will require at least three references (other than the textbook). Be sure to use a variety of reference sources (and a variety of types of sources). Appropriate references can be articles, websites, or preferably peer-reviewed journals or books. Articles from magazines and Web sites are acceptable but should not be considered as reliable as peer-reviewed journals or books and should be verified accordingly. Quote where appropriate. Give citations for facts and quotations, indicating the sources for the material you are using. However, you should not just copy paragraphs from other sources. Explain the material as clearly as you can in your own words.

To insure currency within the project, two of the three references must have been published within the last 6 months.

The format of your Works Cited should use MLA format. Do not simple give a list of url’s.  The Final Research Poster Project needs to be submitted in AssignmentsResearch Project by 11:55 pm on Wednesday, April 25.

             Project Grading Criteria:

A grading rubric is available via the Gradebook that will show how the grade will be calculated.

Warnings and Reminders:

  • Project Uniqueness. This project must be created this semester for this course. Do not turn in a paper done earlier for another course or for your job. If you are writing a paper on the same topic for another class this semester you must get my approval ahead of time. Your project may check out as being plagiarized if you submit it to more than one professor.
  • Start early. In the past, some students have waited until too late to get started, and then discovered that it was difficult to find enough material on their chosen topic.
  • Uniqueness of Topic. I will only approve any given research topics for a maximum of three students. I don’t want to read about a given topic more than 3 times while grading. If you want to select a very common topic, you should submit your topic for approval early.
  • Write an outline. One of the most common problems with projects is poor organization. Organize your thoughts. Be sure you include all requirements within the project.
  • Pay attention to the quality of your sources. If you use articles from the Web as sources, give the URL and the organization sponsoring the site. There’s a lot of junk and unsupported opinion on the Web.
