Assignment

Your goal here is to demonstrate your engagement with materials in this course (modules, readings, assignments to date).

Tips for completing this assignment:

·         This is your personal reflection about how your thoughts about social media have (or have not) changed over the course of this semester. There is no single correct answer for any of the prompts you will be addressing. Instead, you will be graded on how convincing your arguments are, and the degree to which you draw evidence/support for your arguments from the course texts (modules and assigned readings).

·         Use the sections below as headings to help organize your thoughts and make your reflection easy to follow.

What is to be submitted:

Your summative course reflection will include the following sections. Where appropriate, references to course readings and course modules should be included.

Title Page

Your name, course, section, date, and your professor’s name.

Definition of Social Media (300 words max)

State your definition of social media that you wrote down at the beginning of this course. Now that you have completed all of the modules and readings for this course, has this definition changed? If so, state the revised definition. If it has not changed, clearly state why you are keeping your original definition. Make reference to course readings using proper citation techniques (APA or MLA) to support this new definition, or to provide evidence that your original definition is still appropriate.

Internet Presence Audit (1 page max)

Your first assignment for this course asked you to examine the current state of your internet presence. Using the information you have gained by participating in this course, go back and revisit the goals you had set for yourself in the reflection portion of this assignment. Have you met these goals? Are these goals still relevant? What new goals do you have for the next month? What social media-related goals do you hope to achieve before graduation?

Identity Portfolio (1 page max)

In this second assignment, you were tasked with compiling a series of photos to represent a specific component of your identity. You also wrote a summary explaining what the message you hoped to impart on your audience was. Then, your classmates provided their own commentaries about what they thought the intended message(s) were for your photo collection. Revisiting this peer feedback, evaluate whether or not you were successful in relaying your message to your audience. In light of this feedback, what, if anything, would you do differently?

Social Media Transformation (1 page max)

Your third assignment involved creating two social media profiles. The first was “unprofessional”. The second was a re-designed profile intended to be read as being more professional. What lessons, tips, or tricks did you lean from completing the redesign? Will you make any changes to your own social networking site profile(s)? Why or why not?

Reading Review (300 words max per article)

Throughout this course we have read a variety of readings. In this section you should discuss five readings that were particularly thought provoking or transformative for your conceptualization of social media in relationship to your personal, professional identity. State the main thesis/argument of each reading and clearly describe how this has influenced your own thinking about social media. Readings must be cited using proper APA or MLA citation techniques.

Course Topic Review (300 words max per topic)

In the modules for this course you have been introduced to a variety of theorists, case studies, and uses for social media. In this section of your summative refection, describe three topics covered in any of the modules that were particularly thought provoking or transformative for your conceptualization of social media in relationship to your personal, professional identity. Indicate Module names and indicate slide numbers when referencing course topics  e.g. (Module 1 – What is social media?, slide 3.2).

Reading Critique (300 words max per article)

In the course you will have inevitably come across readings that you disliked or disagreed with. This section provides the opportunity to offer up critique of three readings. Here you should summarize the main thesis/argument of each reading. Then, describe your critique of the reading – what is it that the author gets wrong? What was missing? What further evidence would be needed to sway your opinion? Here it is not enough to state you disliked a particular article, you must also explain – as specific as possible – what about the article you disliked and why.
