Cultural and Ethnics Paper Help: Multicultural Toronto by the Numbers Major Research Essay

Due: April 6, 2018 by 3.30pm.

Topic:

The major essay is a detailed study of an ethnic, occupational, religious group, or a city block in the city of Toronto sometime around the year 1911.

Purpose:

The purpose of the essay is to offer a general overview of your data set, including profiles of occupation, home ownership, family size, ethnicity, religion, and so forth. You will be addressing how these people lived—in a real setting—a city block. At times the group in your data set may be the majority on this block and at other times they will share the space with other groups. Using traditional sources and the routinely generated records discussed in this course, you will be asked to create a portrait of this group in their urban setting asking such questions as:

For Ethnic or Religious Groups:

Did they live in clusters on this street?

What was their occupational profile?

What class did they tend to belong to?

How would describe their housing?

Did they rent or own?

What was the religious profile of the community?

Were they educated?

How did they compare in these categories to their neighbours?

Did they live next to important religious or cultural centres; what about near places of

work (i.e., factories)?

**These questions are not exhaustive, but meant only as a guide to get you to engage with your group.**

Between 30 and 45 households. You can elect to sample by entire households or household heads, but you must indicate the strengths and weaknesses of the approach.

Your paper must include some graphs/tables/figures/charts to provide evidence for your findings. The five key components of the graphic will be necessary where applicable.

Eg:

This is an example of the graph: and you can also choose other types of graph to provide evidence for your findings, but 5 key elements should be necessary.

Your paper must also include a map of your street or neighbourhood. The Goad City Atlas will be very helpful.

Sources:

Each record group (census, tax assessment, directory etc.) counts as a source. You must have a bibliography/source list at the end of the paper, in alphabetical order, with a minimum of fifteen sources.
