By the 1490s, Europeans were experiencing a renewed curiosity about the world. As nation-states began to rely on their navies to establish trade connections and power, overseas exploration became important.

This, in turn, led to contact between Europeans and Native Americans, as exploration eventuallly gave way to permanent settlements in the New World.
