In Supplemental Reading 14-9, we read the conclusion of Abraham Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech, given during the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Although Lincoln has come down in history as the President most responsible for ending the institution of slavery in the United States, as a senate candidate two years prior to his election to the presidency, he seems to be calling for the end of slavery “agitation,” not slavery itself.

Each time the nation added new territories and new states, the sectional rivalry intensified. The debate over slavery was part of that debate. Yet slavery was not the only issue that divided Americans in the 1850s.
