In the past four weeks, it has become clear that culture is very much a part of who we are, and language is our way of communicating and preserving our culture. This week, we watched an intense foreign and bilingual film about culture and identity. We have also discussed the need to preserve a native language while introducing and developing a second or third language. Finally, we have identified ways in which we can effectively bring art and culture into the classroom through comprehensible input and scaffolding.
Consider all of these factors as you develop a sample group work assignment in the subject of your choice for a future group of students. This sample will be presented to fellow teachers at your future school site who require your expertise in English Language Learner (ELL) and culturally responsive strategies. For this assignment, you must:
Identify a learning objective.
Include culturally responsive strategies (highlighting the culturally-laden comprehensible input and scaffolding strategies).
Use an assessment tool or method.
Demonstrate the alignment of the learning objective, culturally responsive strategies, and assessment.
The goal will be to teach your fellow teachers about the benefits of group work while demonstrating to them, through a sample lesson plan, that culturally responsive approaches can be achieved and are also ideal when working with ELLs.
Your paper should be organized as follows:
Introduce the importance of group work, and identify research that supports oral development and/or group work.
Present your lesson, and discuss the culturally-laden comprehensible input and scaffolding strategies.
Review the ELL shadowing strategies, and determine an appropriate assessment method and/or tool for your group work activity.
Conclude your paper with a call to action. Discuss how group work can and must be done to ensure student academic and social success.
