Apply the four-stage process to the following Scenario:

This four-stage creative process guides leaders to make sound decisions and draw informed conclusions about the best course of action.

Imagine you are the manager of the marketing department for a luxury-brand watch manufacturer. Sales have slowed in recent years, in the wake of the economic downturn.

Develop a PowerPoint Presentation that includes the following:

Identify the source of the problem for employees in your department.

Employ creative-thinking strategies to present a solution to the problem.

Persuade and motivate employees to fully support the plan.

Your presentation should be at least ten slides in length. All sources used must be cited and referenced according to APA format.

As you can see, all of these characteristics can be learned and often just being aware that they can spur positive outcomes will motivate organizational leaders to adopt these behaviors. Leaders can also encourage other employees to be dynamic, daring, resourceful, hardworking, and independent by following the four stages of the creative process described by Ruggiero (2015):

 Stage 1: Searching for challenges: By looking for challenges and being aware of the difficulties posed, organizational leaders can begin to develop a solution. Leaders who are unable to recognize challenges are also unable to resolve them. The importance of this stage “is reflected in the fact that you can be creative only in response to challenges that you perceive” (Ruggiero, 2015, p. 100).

 Stage 2: Expressing the problem or issue: Recall the discussion in Unit IV about the importance of fully expressing and exploring a problem or issue. Creative organizational leaders will utilize all resources available—people, written reports, experts, and other information—to identify a problem or issue. Understanding all aspects of the situation enables leaders to produce a more effective solution.

 Stage 3: Investigating the problem or issue: As addressed in Unit IV, once a problem or issue is identified, the next step is to investigate further. A variety of methods are available to organizational leaders, from obtaining statistical information and reports from published sources to conducting new surveys and interviews to gather new data. Depending on the resources available, leaders should determine the best approach to fully research the issue.

 Stage 4: Producing ideas: After a problem is identified, fully expressed, and extensively researched, multiple potential solutions should be posed. This will enable organizational leaders to weigh a variety of ideas and identify the best approach to resolve the problem at hand (pp. 99-101).
