American Literature

Discussion Question 3: To start this discussion, find two articles on modernism in American literature (from high quality, non-wikipedia or study-cheat websites). Cite each article in MLA Style and summarize the contents of the articles. What did you learn about modernism? How is it defined? What are some examples of it? Discussion Question 4: Identify three moments/selections/elements/passages from Hurston, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner. Discuss why each moment is representative of modernism in literature. Discussion Question 5: What do the main characters from Wright’s piece and from Cheever’s piece both have in common? What do the stories say about longing, emptiness, and the American dream? Have you ever felt the same way? Use quotations from both stories to support your analysis. Discussion Question 6: Research Hemingway’s writing style. What makes it unique? What makes it an example of modernism? Cite evidence from your research and from the story we read this week. Use quotations and document everything in MLA Style.
